APD adopts transgender interaction policies

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Police Department has established new policies for officer interaction with people who are transgender or intersex.

Police Chief George Turner said the policies will go into effect at the end of November, which gives officers time to be trained on them.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed called the new policies "another step forward in our efforts to celebrate diversity."

"I commend the Atlanta Police Department for their commitment to equal and respectful treatment of Atlanta's transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming individuals, citizens and visitors," Reed said.

Woman kidnapped from east Atlanta bar parking lot

Woman kidnapped from east Atlanta bar parking lot

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police are investigating a kidnapping that took place early Thursday morning in east Atlanta village.

According to Capt. Paul Guerrucci, a woman was leaving The Earl around 1:30 Thursday morning. As she tried to leave the parking lot, a man grabbed her from her car and threw her into the back of an SUV, driven by another man, eyewitnesses told police. One of the suspects then fled in the woman's car.

The woman was found unharmed nearly 18 hours later in NW Atlanta. Police are looking into the possibility that the suspects may have been impersonating officers. Guerrucci said some witnesses said the men did represent themselves as police, while other witnesses did not.
