EAST ATLANTA --  As the APS rezoning agenda begins to come to a close, some Coan community members are making a last ditch attempt to save their Coan Middle School.  Coan Middle which is part of the Grady cluster of schools is slated for closure and the plan is to bus its children to King Middle School (5 miles away).

Parents who are against the closure came up with the idea to create a "Future of Coan Middle School" photo that will demonstrate the large number of families in the community that will be affected by any closure.  The plan is that hundreds of community members/parents will show up at Bessie Branham Park to gather and have a group photo taken by local photographer Bryan Stillwagon.

The following is the letter that has been passed out to local residents:

Hello East Lake, Edgewood, and Kirkwood Neighbors,

We will be holding a Tri-Community Photo Shoot Tuesday night, March 20, 6:30PM on Bessie Branham Park’s hillside in Kirkwood (2051 Delano Drive NE).  Bryan Stillwagon of Stillwagon Photography (www.stillwagonphotography.com) has generously offered his services to capture an image of The Future of Coan Middle School. We desperately need EVERY child in all three communities, ages pre-birth -8th grade, to come participate (yes, even pregnant parents).  We are hoping this image will send a strong message to Superintendent Davis and all of APS just how many young children are in our communities thus the reason to KEEP COAN OPEN

Hopefully the 6:30PM time will give parents enough time to arrive home from work and will allow parents/children enough time to come after Tuesday night Soccer practices.  I know a number of soccer practices end around 6:15/6:30PM.   So, do not think it is too late to come to the park.  We will wait a few minutes to allow as many participants to arrive.

Remember to wear your Keep Coan Open shirts, your neighborhood t-shirts, and your neighborhood school shirts.  Please tell ALL your friends and neighbors about the photo shoot. We need as many people there as possible.

See you there,

Friends of Coan Middle School
