ATLANTA -- The students at Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta are excited to play in the dirt.

Children in grades pre-K through 5th will begin planting seeds and seedlings in the school's edible garden this Friday.

The elaborate garden at Burgess-Peterson consists of three areas, including a raised bed, an orchard and outdoor classroom, and a woodland garden with plants donated by another local gardener. Students, parents, school staff and volunteers keep the garden tidy and growing year-round.

The garden has attracted some high profile attention. Last year, first lady Michelle Obama visited the school and praised it for the edible garden, which encourages children to be active and eat healthy.
