Paws for the Cause to help homeless pets

DECATUR, Ga. -- DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James will host an event next month to benefit pets in need of loving homes.

Paws for the Cause will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Glenlake Park. It is hosted by James' office as well as DeKalb County Animal Services & Enforcement, Animal Action Resue and Village Vets.

"Protecting animals from cruel and neglectful behavior is one of my top priorities," James said in a statement. "These partnerships are essential to combating animal cruelty in our community and promoting animal adoption."

In addition to music, food and other activities, Paws for the Cause attendees can take advantage of low-cost microchipping and immunizations. All creatures, two- and four-legged alike, are invited to attend.

Glenlake Park is located at 1121 Church Street in Decatur.

TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola to host Belk Community Day

ATLANTA -- The TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola is hosting Belk Community Day Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Kids will have the chance to see the pros practice as well as take part in a youth clinic that afternoon. Kids 18 and under get in free all week with a ticketed adult.

The location is East Lake Golf Club, 2575 Alston Drive SE. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and are $25 plus tax and fees.

Atlanta Police to host crime awareness program

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Police Department's COPS unit will hold a crime awareness program at the East Atlanta Library next week.

COPS stands for Community-Oriented Policing Section. Its goal is to educate citizens to help them be more aware of their surroundings and prevent as many crimes as possible.

The program, called Street Smarts, will be Monday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. in the library's meeting room.

It is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call the library at 404-730-5438 to reserve a spot in the class.

DeKalb Family Fun Day rescheduled

DeKalb Family Fun Day rescheduled

LITHONIA, Ga. -- The sixth annual DeKalb Family Fun Day has been rescheduled.

DeKalb Family Fun Day will be Sunday, Aug. 25 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bransby Outdoor YMCA at Rock Chapel in Lithonia. It was originally scheduled for this Sunday, Aug. 11, but was cancelled due to predicted bad weather.

The festival will feature food, entertainment, games and vendors. Residents are encouraged to bring donations of school supplies for needy children in the community.

Past DeKalb Family Fun Days have resulted in attendance of 3,000 people -- which means the festival needs plenty of volunteers to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Beer Festival, Brownwood Frolic this weekend

ATLANTA -- Celebrate in East Atlanta Village with two festivals this weekend.

The East Atlanta Beer Festival will be held Saturday, May 18 and was created to raise money for local projects. Several groups benefit from the annual event, including the East Atlanta Kids' Club, Burgess Peterson Academy, East Atlanta Farmers Market and East Lake YMCA.

Pollination Festival to celebrate all things yellow

ATLANTA -- Pollen season is one of the most dreaded times in metro Atlanta, but East Atlanta Village has adopted an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude.

This year's East Atlanta Pollination Festival will be held Sunday, Apr. 21 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Brownwood Park.

Festivities include arts and crafts, games, music and a costume contest with prizes for "Best Pollinator," "Queen Bee" and more.

Brownwood Park is located at 602 Brownwood Avenue SE.
